How to make artists' oil paints

The last step -grinding- aims at dispersing pigments as finely as possible in the binder. The finest dispersion of pigments achieved, the more intense and powerful the resulting color will be.

For this step, we traditionally use a glass muller which is the traditional tool for that job. This is a handy instrument to have when a large quantity of paint needs to be prepared or when you want to have a good dispersion of pigments. Use both hands, press and make circular motions.

If you don't have a muller, you can use your flexible steel spatulas to grind. Don't feel bad a muller isn't necessary to make artists' oil paints, you can make very good oil paints without a muller.
