Methyl cellulose (or methylcellulose) is a chemical compound derived from cellulose. It is a hydrophilic white powder in pure form and dissolves in cold (but not in hot) water, forming a clear viscous solution or gel. Used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products, as a binder, water retention agent, and also as a treatment of constipation. Like natural cellulose, it is not digestible, not toxic, and not an allergen.

Methyl cellulose is used in a wide array of processes and materials, here are a few examples. It can be employed as a mild resoluble glue which can be washed away with water. It may also be used in the fixation of delicate pieces of art as well as in conservation to loosen and clean off old glue from canvasses and book boards. Methyl cellulose is also the main ingredient in many wallpaper pastes and is also used as a binder in pastel crayons and in medications. Methyl cellulose is used as sizing in the production of papers and textiles as it protects the fibers from absorbing water or oil.

Use this binder to make watercolors, gouaches or water based emulsion paints. Simply mix with dry pigments or aqua-dispersions . Absolutely non toxic, this binder is also resoluble.
