Beeswax (cera alba) is secreted by the glands of the honeybee (Apis Mellifera) and is used as a building material for honeycombs. Modern agriculture depends on professional beekeeping for pollination of crops. The large number of agricultural countries exporting Beeswax ensures that it is never in short supply. Because of the highly complex composition of Beeswax and its soft pliable nature, Beeswax remains an indispensable raw material for many finished products even after centuries of commercial development. Chemically, beeswax consists mainly of esters of fatty acids and various long-chain alcohols.

Beeswax was among the first plastics to be used, alongside other natural polymers such as gutta-percha, horn, tortoiseshell, and shellac. For thousands of years, beeswax has had a wide variety of applications; it has been found in the tombs of Egypt, in wrecked Viking ships, and in Roman ruins. Beeswax is extremely stable, never goes “bad” and can be always be heated and reused no matter how long ago it’s been harvested.

Historical uses :

• As candles - the oldest intact beeswax candles north of the Alps where found in Germany, dating to 6th/7th century AD
• In the manufacture of cosmetics
• In wax tablets used for writing purposes
• In bow making
• To strengthen and preserve sewing thread, cordage, shoe laces, etc.
• As a component of sealing wax
• In the process of mummification in ancient Egypt because of it’s anti-bacteria and hydrophobic qualities.
• In various polishes and varnishes (shoe wax)

Uses in fine arts :

• In encaustic paintings (where it is essentially the binder) modern or ancient (such as the Fayum mummy portraits)
• As an additive in various oil painting mediums and varnishes recipes
• In the manufacture of oil sticks and artists’ pastels
• As a modeling material in the lost-wax casting process, or “cire perdue”
• In batik
• In restoration and art conservation
