preparation instructions

Depending on the desired concentration, you will first need to weight the required amount of shellac flakes and alcohol. At Kama pigments we recommend a starting concentration of 15% which is sufficiently diluted to avoid errors and unevenness when applying the varnish. However some will prefer the "3 lbs cut" American standard which stands for 3lb of shellac flakes to 1 U.S. gallon (3.78L) of alcohol. This is equivalent to a concentration of 27%. The main advantage of this method is that it is very easy to measure. The disadvantage is that you will get about 4.2L of lacquer you’ll need to use. Also the higher the concentration of shellac, the faster the finish become tacky, and more difficult to apply. Often, it is easier and yields nicer finishes when applying several layers of a lower concentration solution rather than a 3lb cut one.

Note that the recommended shelf life of a shellac solution is 12 months. Beyond this period, it is possible (but not automatic) that the finish will remains sticky after drying.

In our example we will use a concentration of 15% to produce 500ml of lacquer solution.

The amounts will thus be:

  • shellac flakes: 64g
  • Denatured alcohol: 361g

(Solution of 500ml @ approximately 0.85g / ml = 425g x 15% = 63.75 → 64g)

american system

  • concentrated solution "3 lb. cut": 3 x 454g (1.36 kg) shellac flakes + 1 gallon (3.78L) of alcohol
  • diluted solution "1 lb. cut": 57g shellac flakes + 236ml of alcohol

Once the ingredients have been weighed, mix them in a glass or plastic container and let them sit until dissolved. Before using your solution, we recommend that you strain it since shellac is a natural product made by insects and will always contain a small proportion of insoluble material such as impurities from packaging, insects carcasses or other impurities.

recommendations

  • Always filter your solution before using
  • Shake well to have an homogeneous solution to work with.
  • Always use glass or plastic jars, do not keep prepared shellac in metal containers as it will rust when in contact with alcohol.
  • To get a perfect finish sand between coats, clean using a tack cloth before recoating
  • Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before recoating (approximately 2-4 hours)
