Gamboge is a natural resin extracted from various species of trees present in Cambodia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka; Genus Garcinia are the kind of trees most often used but are not the only ones. Brought to Europe form China in 1603, it was first used as a purgative and then it was quickly adopted by painters.This deep saffron to mustard yellow resin is used as a pigment and therefore classified as natural yellow no.24 (Ny24). It is soluble in alcohol, so it is a dye; hence, it is especially used in watercolors.
