詳細
Gum copal, also known as manila copal, is a resin produced by the semi-fossilized sap of a tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, genus Daniellia. Due to common impurities and differences in regions, gum copal ranges in colors from blacks to yellows to whites. Gum copal exists in a state very similar to that of amber but with some primary differences, nevertheless it is commonly mistaken for amber. However, unlike the latter, gum copal is usually only 100-1 000 years old and has not yet fossilized.
Gum copal is a semi-fossilized, amorphous resin, which has a unique set of properties such as resistance to water; it has good storing quality and has the ability to give glossy finishing along with possessing superior binding abilities.
Copal resin is mainly used as a raw material for industrial and fine arts varnishes because it produces lustrous, elastic finishes with good weathering properties. These varnishes are used in the manufacture of wood and paper products. Other applications include linoleum, oilcloth, printing inks, adhesives and floor and shoe polish. Copal has also found application in the manufacture of dental products.
