Mastic resin is derived from the sap of a Mediterranean shrub named Pistacia lentiscus (Anacardiaceae family). The most sought after variety comes from the Greek island of Chios; it is the one we offer at KAMA and is sold in small tears. Within the European Union, mastic production in Chios enjoys a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin).
During the antiquity, this natural resin was used as a chewing gum and it is still used for this purpose in several countries of the Middle East today. Mastic is also used in food notably pastry & confectionery, in cosmetics and incenses and for the production of liquors (Chios Mastiha).
In fine arts, the raw mastic resin is dissolved in turpentine to make mastic varnish that is used in the making many oleo-resinous painting mediums and picture varnishes.
