Acid dyes main uses are to color fibers. Silk, wool and most natural (protein) fibers, even some nylons can be colored with them, however acid dyes do not perform well on synthetic fibers. When dyeing fabrics you must add to the dye bath, hence the name acid dyes, usually white vinegar or citric acid are used.

Extremely brilliant and colorfast, acid dyes are highly concentrated; soluble in hot water, they will produce, uniform color when doing immersion dyeing. Acid dyes are known to produce the most vibrant colors of all.

Acid dyes can also be used in wood tinting, food colorants and even artists inks.
