additional informations
Sandarac or sandarac is a vegetable resin extracted from the Atlas cedar (Tetraclinis reticulata), native to North Africa and sold in the form of tears or grains. It is frequently used in the composition of alcohol varnishes as it ensures transparency (sandarac dissolves to a clear solution in alcohol). Another way to prepare a varnish with this resin is to melt and add it to a drying oil, linseed oil, for example.
Known since antiquity, Sandarac makes hard, colorless and shiny varnish that are better applied with a brush. From the eighth century, it has been used in the manufacture of medieval fat varnishes (hot oil method described above). It was along with mastic resin, the resin of choice for making varnishes. It is very similar to gum rosin but less susceptible to oxidation.
