Mineral oil are obtained by the distillation of certain fossil fuels. From a chemical point of view, this liquid is composed mainly of alkanes C15-C40 (composed 15 to 40 carbon atoms).

This type of oil has traditionally been used for lighting (oil lamp). Today, mineral oil can be found in electrical high power transformers. It is also on the official list of food additives as well as being used in cosmetics applications where it prevents other active ingredients to penetrate the skin. Lastly mineral oils can be used in woodfinishing for the protection of certain wood notably chopping boards due to their nontoxic nature.
